HUD doesn't just stand for mortgages, car accident stopper too?

The acronym HUD generally makes people think about the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, the agency tasked with oversight of home mortgage lending practices. There is something else that the acronym stands for: Heads-Up Display.

It is the latest proposal for reducing the number of distracted driving car accidents that occur on basically a daily basis in New Jersey and across the entire nation. In fact, in the year 2010 alone, there were at least 3,092 deaths that were traced back to distracted driving. Beyond that, there were 416,000 people who suffered injuries in similarly attributed collisions.

There is no doubt that much of the conversation has been focused on texting and driving. It only takes the average 4.6 seconds or less of focus that a single text message requries to raise the risk of an accident 23 times. Legislation has been passed in many states across the nation that bans this dangerous behavior.

Although texting should certainly come with a negligence warning when driving, it isn't the only dangerous cellphone feature. Does your smartphone have a map or other navigational app? Navigational GPS systems on cellphones and on separate devices cause some dangerous distraction as well.

It is this that the new "heads-up display" attempts to provide an answer for. The product is manufactured by Garmin, one of the largest digital navigational manufacturers, and is set to hit store shelves later this summer. The HUD projects the navigational date onto the windshield, right where the driver's attention is already needed.

While the product was produced to address this danger, the National Highway Traffic Safety Adminstration wants a little more information and testing before it signs off on the product as the next best accident reducer.
