Intoxicated New Jersey man causes car accident with officer

A popular New Jersey high school teacher has been released on bail after seriously injuring a police officer while intoxicated. The man slammed into the 39-year-old officer's marked car and then fled the accident scene. He was later caught by police in a backyard and now faces multiple charges.

The car accident happened in the early morning hours of April 19 in Lodi on Route 46. The officer suffered broken ribs and a fractured skull in the crash. He was taken to Hackensack University Medical, where he remains in critical condition.

The 36-year-old who caused the accident is now facing multiple criminal charges, including assault by auto, aggravated assault, leaving an accident scene and obstructing justice. His bail was set for $150,000, and he is suspended with pay from his teaching position at Lodi High School.

This wasn't the man's first DUI offense. He has a previous conviction on his record from November 2012 and had his driver's license suspended for 240 days. He was handed down the suspension for having a blood alcohol content of more than 0.10.

Besides his criminal charges, the man could face a civil suit as well from the police officer and his family. The officer suffered serious injuries in the crash and likely has a long road to recovery ahead of him. In addition, he will likely have exorbitant medical expenses to pay for his treatment and rehabilitation. Workers' compensation, though, should cover the cost of the man's medical bills and lost wages.

Compensation from the negligent driver can help an accident victim with the financial implications caused by such a crash. The victim can receive financial recovery to pay for both monetary and emotional damages.
