Pedestrian accidents high in 2014 in New Jersey

In New Jersey, 2014 was a year of growing issues related to pedestrian injuries and deaths. The New Jersey State Police have reported a dramatic increase in the number of pedestrian fatalities since 2013, which has been called, "alarming."

In New Jersey, 563 deaths took place on the roads. Of those, 170 were pedestrian deaths. That total was a jump of over 25 percent from 2013. Of those who died, over 50 percent of them were over 50 years old. Only seven were under 17.

What's caused this rise in fatalities? A spokesperson for AAA Mid-Atlantic reported that it's a shared problem between motorists and pedestrians. She says distracted drivers, impaired drivers, impaired pedestrians and distracted pedestrians all contributed to the total number of fatalities for 2014. The worst areas for these fatalities? Essex, Camden and Bergen Counties.

Interestingly, despite a law requiring drivers to stop for pedestrians in a marked crosswalk, this doesn't always happen. That's why pedestrians need to be wary, even when they technically have the right of way. Another thing that is interesting to note is that State Police have reported a spike in the number of fatal crashes in the state in 2014 compared to 2013, although they did not state what they thought the rise was a result of.

If you've suffered from a pedestrian accident and now have injuries or have lost a loved one, your situation may seem dire. With help, you can make sure you get the compensation you need while pointing out the dangers of the road. That may help the local government work to stop these accidents.
