Car accident facts: Quick facts about accidents in America

Once every 14 seconds, someone is hurt in a car accident in the United States. If you've been in a crash, you, too, are part of that statistic. Following a crash, you may have to work with an attorney to make a claim, so you can get the compensation needed to pay for your medical bills and lost wages.

There are some other interesting facts about car accidents you may not know. For instance, were you aware that if you talk on a cellphone while you drive, your risk of an accident goes up by 400 percent? This is likely because those who are on their cellphones aren't necessarily paying attention to the road, and they aren't using both hands on the wheel. This means the wheel could be jerked out of their hands if a bump or pothole is struck.

Most accidents, as you've probably heard rumored before, do take place closer to home. Why? People may feel more secure in their environments and pay less attention, or they may speed to get home quickly. Most car accidents do happen within three miles of home.

It's said that 19 percent of fatal crashes take place on Saturdays. While there is no direct link to the cause of these accidents, it's possible a number of reasons lead to the accidents. Drinking and driving, staying up late, and traveling at a night could all contribute to a higher accident count on Saturdays.

Who is really the most dangerous driver on the road? Surveys suggest it's men, not women, who cause the most accidents. In fact, men cause twice as many accidents as women. The reason behind this discrepancy could be physiological; men tend to be more aggressive drivers.
