Collision leads to 3 deaths, 73 injuries due to ice and snow

Severe snow has been hitting southern Pennsylvania and western New Jersey, making commutes more than a little dangerous for some drivers. Now, a massive pileup has led to many injuries and deaths. A woman from New Jersey is one of the three that died in a 64-vehicle pileup on Route 78; she was traveling back to the state when the pileup occurred. According to the news, the pileup also left 73 others injured.

How could a crash get so out of hand? Images show icy, slick and snow-covered roads. The woman from New Jersey, age 54, died at the scene in the middle of the major collision. Another two people were killed as well, one age 50 and another 57. They were from New York and Tennessee, respectively.

The initial crash took place just before 9:30 a.m., on I-78, just about two hours from New Jersey's state line. The crash resulted in both lanes of the highway being blocked and shut down overnight while emergency teams made their way to the injured people in their vehicles.

There were around 12 commercial vehicles and numerous passenger vehicles involved. On top of the primary collision, a number of secondary crashes took place on the icy highway.

It's a guess that the snow caused the accidents, but if you're involved in a situation like this, you know that driving safely in the conditions can help prevent accidents and injuries in the first place. If you're struck by someone who slides because he or she was speeding, not paying attention or fell asleep at the wheel, you can file a claim against that driver's insurance for his or her negligence that led to the collision.
