Pedestrian accidents: Despite reductions, they still happen today

How can pedestrian accidents be reduced? The Federal Highway Administration wants to address the high number of pedestrian fatalities with the Focused Approach to Pedestrian Safety project. This project started in 2004 and had the first goal of reducing the number of pedestrian fatalities by 10 percent by 2008.

Later in the history of the project, the goal was moved to 2011, because 2008 was too soon to see the changes that needed to happen. The project encouraged local areas and states to focus on pedestrian safety action plans, which would help keep more people safe when crossing the roads or walking near roadways.

By 2010, it was possible to look at how the government's approach had worked. An evaluation showed that between 2002 and 2008, the states that played a part in the program had seen pedestrian fatalities drop by 12.1 percent at least. In other states, the drop still took place, but it was much lower at 4.7 percent.

New Jersey, at the time of the study, was facing 150 or more pedestrian deaths a year. Today, there are still accidents that take place, and you may be dealing with the aftermath of one now. If you were hit while crossing the street because a negligent driver wasn't paying attention or was driving drunk, it's important that you get the compensation you need to move forward with your life and get the medical care that you deserve.
