Saying sober can save lives in New Jersey

The New Jersey attorney general has issued an important statement regarding times when there are increases in traffic and the potential for additional drunk drivers on the roads. While New Year's Eve and Day are over now, that doesn't mean that these tips should be ignored until next year. In fact, traveling safely is important every day, no matter where you are or what you're doing.

During 2015, there were over 1,700 DWI arrests made over the New Year's holiday time frame. Across the country, 10,265 people were killed in alcohol-impaired traffic accidents that year, too. This year, New Jersey aimed to bring that number down and released important information on ways you can stay safe.

One of the easiest ways is to avoid walking home and to take a taxi or to use a ride-sharing service to get where you're going. If you have to walk home, have someone escort you, so you both can look out for one another. While drivers should not get behind the wheel when intoxicated, it happens, and two sets of eyes keeping an eye out for trouble is better than one.

Pedestrians should only cross at crosswalks and never cross without looking and listening for oncoming traffic. When there's no sidewalk available, stay as far off the roadway as possible and walk toward oncoming traffic, so drivers are more likely to see you. Don't walk out into streets from between parked cars, and make sure to be cautious in parking lots and other busy areas. While drunk drivers are more common during the holidays, they can be on the roads at any time; always stay vigilant.

If you are involved in an accident that wasn't your fault, you have a right to seek compensation for your medical expenses, pain and suffering, lost wages and much more. An attorney can help you learn more about your legal rights.
