Distracted driving puts pedestrians in danger

Every driver in New Jersey should understand the dangers of driving and texting. Texting is among the most distracting behaviors in which a person can engage behind the wheel, as it engages a person’s hands, eyes and attention. Still, we see people all across the state using their phones while driving.

Despite all information to the contrary, countless motorists continue to believe they can multitask safely. They think if they hold the phone higher up or look down for just a couple seconds, they can surely use their phone and drive at the same time. Too often, it takes a catastrophic accident to get the message across that they cannot.

Recently, for instance, police arrested and charged a 24-year-old woman with multiple offenses including vehicular homicide after she hit and killed two young pedestrians with her car.

Police reports state that she was texting at the time.

According to authorities, the driver was texting while her car drifted over the white solid "fog line" on the road. When her car crossed the line, it struck two 14-year-old girls who were walking on the side of the road. They both died in the crash.

Unfortunately, countless drivers still text and drive without truly recognizing the risks they are taking. And despite the fines and criminal charges they can face for causing an accident while distracted, people still think they can get away with it. Under these circumstances, legal action can be critical in holding parties accountable for their actions.

While filing a lawsuit and pursuing compensation from a negligent, distracted driver cannot undo the damage he or she has caused, it can reiterate the fact that there are penalties for hurting people. It can also help victims and their families secure the financial remedies they need and deserve to recover from an accident.
