Lawsuit brought in relation to escalator accident in New Jersey

Sometimes, a business will have an older escalator or elevator on its premises. There are many different reasons, such as cost-cutting or a belief that there is a certain charm to having an older model, that may be behind a business' decision to stick with an older escalator/elevator rather than replacing it with a new one.

There can be particular maintenance/safety concerns when it comes to older models of escalators and elevators, due to their age. When a business has an older model escalator or elevator on its premises, it is incredibly important for the business to take all steps necessary to keep the escalator/elevator safe. No patron of a business should ever have to be exposed to an unsafe elevator or escalator. Accidents involving escalators or elevators can cause patrons to suffer substantial injuries.

Recently, here in New Jersey, a premises liability case has arisen involving an escalator accident.

One day in August, a 10-year-old girl was on an escalator in a department store at a shopping center in Paramus. The escalator in question is over 50 years old. The girl's leg got trapped in the escalator while she was on it.

The girl's family claims that this accident occurred because the escalator was dangerous. They allege that the escalator had damaged components, had too large of a gap between steps and had not been properly maintained.

The accident caused the girl to suffer leg and foot injuries that resulted in her having to undergo numerous surgeries and losing two of her toes.

The girl's family is suing the department store in connection to this escalator accident. They are asking for millions of dollars in damages.
