Bus strikes and kills 6-year-old school boy in New Jersey

If you've lost a loved one or been injured in a pedestrian accident, you are likely aware of the damage a car can cause to a person. Extensive injuries can lead to years of recovery - if a person survives. Unfortunately, this pedestrian accident reported on Jan. 7 led to the death of a 6-year-old boy in New Jersey; the bus that was supposed to pick him up for school simply ran him over and drove away.

According to the news, his mother saw the whole thing happen; he had been walking around the front of the bus to get on, and the driver starting to move forward before he was out of the way, striking him. The mother reported that the bus's safety arm was out when it started to move forward; the front driver's side tire hit the boy as the bus rolled ahead.

She reported that even after the accident, the driver didn't stop; her son was dragged behind the bus. Unfortunately, this isn't a one-of-a-kind incident; the Transportation Research Board of the National Academies has reported that every year, around 800 children are killed in motor vehicle crashes during school travel hours. Out of those, 20, at least 15 pedestrians, die in school bus-related accidents.

Being struck by a vehicle can cause damage that is irreversible, and serious accidents can lead to death. If you have lost a loved one in an accident, you may be able to seek compensation for funeral costs, medical bills, and other financial needs. An experienced attorney may help you to understand your rights for moving forward with a lawsuit in civil court.
