Former officer charged after lethal joyride

A police officer in North Brunswick had his future planned out. He was moving up the ranks in the police force, on his way to becoming a captain. Eventually, he wanted to be the chief of a department. He had been on the force for 19 years, and it looked like everything was going in the right direction.

However, an impulsive decision derailed those hopes. The man was able to borrow a Dodge Viper, a very fast and powerful sports car. He then asked another officer if he wanted to go for a ride in the car, and the two of them took it out on the highway. There, they were intentionally speeding and committing traffic violations. The officer who had borrowed the car was behind the wheel when he lost all control of the vehicle. It left the roadway, slammed into a utility pole, and killed the other officer.

The officer who had been driving was charged with official misconduct, to which he entered a guilty plea, admitting that he was a negligent driver and that he had broken the laws on purpose. He said in court that he was very sorry for what had happened and that he had ruined his entire life because of the decisions that he made. He also apologized for what had happened, but was given three years in prison for his actions. He will have to serve at least two before he can seek parole, and he also is not allowed to keep his job as a police officer, even after he gets out.

When accidents lead to injuries and even death, it is important for those who are impacted to know their rights. The fact that it was an accident in no way means that the person who was guilty is not responsible for what occurred.
