What benefits come with workers' compensation payments?

When you seek workers' compensation for an injury in New Jersey, you will receive some forms of benefits. You may receive medical benefits, temporary total benefits, or permanent total benefits depending on your injury and how it affects you. What are these benefits?

Medical benefits cover your medical care. All necessary and reasonable medical care will be provided to you, and this includes things like prescriptions, surgeries, and rehabilitation services. The money for these services are paid by the insurance carrier your employer pays. If your employer is self-insured, then your employer will pay for your care directly.

If you are temporarily disabled, then you may receive temporary total disability benefits. These benefits do not exceed 75 percent of the state's average weekly wage and can't be less than 20 percent of those wages. You'll receive the compensation for as long as you are unable to work or under ongoing medical care for your condition. If you are released as fit to work, then the benefits will cease.

If you suffer permanent disabilities, then your benefits may continue. If you receive partial benefits, these cover the loss of a particular body part, like the eyes, ears, teeth, or fingers. You can also receive compensation for injuries to your lungs, back or heart, for instance. Partial benefits are paid until temporary disability payments are ceased. If you are unable to return to work, these benefits become total disability benefits, and you are able to be paid weekly for 450 weeks. If you can show you are still unable to work after that time has passed, you'll continue to receive the benefits.
