Four injuries commonly caused by car accidents

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, more than three million people are injured every year in car accidents. Although the types of injuries suffered vary depending on the circumstances of the collision, there are certain types of injuries that are more common than others.

Some of the most common injury types include:

1. Head and brain injuries: When a car unexpectedly stops or changes direction, it causes the heads of occupants to experience movements that are unnatural, which can lead to neck or back strains. Additionally, the force caused by the car accident can cause the occupants' heads to hit the steering wheel, dashboard, window or other objects. In less serious collisions, this can lead to a bruising of the head. In more severe collisions, this can cause concussions or even traumatic brain injuries.

2. Broken bones: The same forces that cause damage to occupants' heads can also cause similar damage to arms, legs, back, chest and other body parts of the body. As a result, the bones in areas are especially prone to suffering anything from a hairline fracture to becoming completely shattered.

3. Injuries to children: Even if a child is secured properly with a seatbelt or in a car seat, their small size makes them susceptible to injuries such as broken bones, joint dislocations, head and back injuries, and muscle strain.

4. Spinal injuries: The forces involved in a car accident commonly cause severe strain to the soft tissue located in the neck and back as well as the spine itself. This can cause bulging or herniated disks or even total or partial paralysis, paraplegia or quadriplegia.

Injured? Speak with an attorney

When a car accident occurs, the lucky ones walk away with minor scrapes, cuts or bruises, while the less fortunate are left with life-long injuries, often requiring expensive long-term treatment for these injuries. Fortunately, these expenses may be recouped if the party responsible for the accident was driving negligently.

If you or a loved one have been injured in a car accident, contact the experienced personal injury attorneys at Krivitzky, Springer & Feldman. Our attorneys can advise you further on your right to compensation under New Jersey law and work to hold the party responsible for your injuries accountable for their carelessness.
