You can file a claim after a hit-and-run accident

If you're in a car accident, you know that you shouldn't leave the scene. It's your responsibility to stay and make sure you, your loved ones, and others involved in the accident are getting care. It's your responsibility to exchange information with the other driver and to make a police report in many cases, too.

Leaving the scene of an accident after it takes place results in a hit and run. A hit-and-run accident can be incredibly bad for the victims, because it means they may not be able to recover compensation from the other party and could even be left injured without help on the way.

State laws require that drivers who are involved in accidents stop their vehicles as soon as it's safe to do so, and then they are meant to exchange insurance information and contact details with the other person involved in the accident. If the person was injured or a person was killed, then emergency services and the police should be called to the scene of the accident immediately.

When an accident can involve injuries, it's the legal duty of the driver to help any injured people in any way they can. If a driver leaves the scene of the accident and injured people are left to fend for themselves, that driver is known as a hit-and-run driver and can face criminal charges.

Our website has more information on hit-and-run accidents and what to do if you or a loved one has been injured. It's important that the driver is forced to take responsibility for his or her bad decisions.
