Avoiding common accidents in the workplace

Whatever type of occupation you have, there is the risk of work-related injuries. Although safety training and common sense help in avoiding these accidents, they do still happen. Here are just a few of the most common workplace injuries and how to avoid them.

Repetitive motions

Repetitive motions occur in many job types but are quite common in office work. Long hours spent at a computer typing can lead to injuries such as strained muscles and carpal tunnel. Changing work tasks periodically, taking breaks from computer work frequently, and using ergonomic equipment can help to lessen these types of injuries.

Slips and falls

Working in areas where there are slippery floors or areas that have become cluttered are common places for this type of work-related injury. Several ways to help lessen the occurrence of this type of accident include keeping all walkways free and clear of clutter, using "Caution" signs if floors are wet or slippery, and allowing proper time to complete tasks when in these areas.

Being struck by falling objects

If items are not stacked properly on shelving units can cause injuries ranging from bruising to serious head injuries. Scaffolding on construction sites is also an area where this type of accident may occur. To help avoid this type of accident, make sure items are stacked properly in high areas and wear a construction hardhat if working near scaffolding.

Overexertion can occur when moving items by lifting, pulling, pushing and carrying them. Overexertion mainly occurs when excessive effort has been used to move items and will result in possible strains and sprains to the lower back area. Learning the proper way to lift items is key in preventing these types of injuries. Ask for help when in doubt about the weight of an item. Stop if pain or discomfort is present.

Scalds and burns

These types of injuries are mainly seen in the food service industry, but foundries also have areas of extreme heat. Make sure all equipment is running properly and well-maintained and that the area surrounding ovens or vats is clear of clutter. Do not allow floors in these areas to become slippery.

Prevent workplace injuries by learning safety guidelines for your job and particular work area. Taking your time in performing your job will also help prevent possible injuries.

These are just a few of workplace injuries that are seen on an annual basis. Injuries at work can lead to time off and possible permanent disability. Regardless of whether a work-related injury is accidental or you are at fault, you may be eligible for workers' compensation. The experienced attorneys at Krivitzky, Springer & Feldman can work on your behalf to give your claim the greatest chance of being approved, and that you receive the maximum compensation you are entitled to by law.
