Cyclist and pedestrian collide in serious accident in New Jersey

Pedestrian accidents are very serious in nature; when a pedestrian is hit by a car, truck or even a bicyclist, the pedestrian could be facing life-threatening injuries. Pedestrians don't have any way to protect themselves against the impact of a moving vehicle, and even something as small as a bicycle can lead to injuries due to the speeds cyclists travel at.

Something to recognize is that even cyclists need to obey the rules of the road. If a pedestrian is crossing the street at a crosswalk, the cyclist should slow and stop, allowing the pedestrian to cross. Likewise, pedestrians should look out for cyclists to make sure they don't walk out in front of them and cause an accident.

In a crash, both people can suffer. The metal parts of a bicycle easily lead to bruising and impact wounds, while the risk of lacerations, head injuries and other injuries is also high. While this kind of accident doesn't happen often, when it does, there's a serious risk to both parties involved. This case shows exactly how serious a crash can be.

Wayne police have identified a bicyclist who was injured in a crash involving a pedestrian, leaving both of them seriously hurt. The 58-year-old cyclist has been in serious, but stable, condition since the accident. The teen was also hospitalized at the same hospital as the older man, St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center.

The crash happened when the 58-year-old cyclist collided with the teen who was walking across the street at around 11:30 a.m. The teen, a 16-year-old, had been crossing Lake Drive East when he was struck by the southbound cyclist.

After the investigation, police will be able to determine who was at fault.
