Why do motorcyclists get into accidents?

You love heading out on your motorcycle, because it feels like you're closer to nature. There's little better than the adrenaline of the speed you travel on a highway or through a mountain pass. Even though it's an enjoyable moment for you now, there are risks to riding a motorcycle.

Motorcyclists face additional risks when they're on the roads. They're 26 times more likely to die in a crash than those who are in passenger vehicles, for instance. They are also five times more likely to be injured in a crash than those in larger vehicles.

With increased safety standards, you may think that the number of motorcycle accidents would be on the decline. The truth is that they are actually increasing, and they have more than doubled since 1999.

There are many specific issues that lead to motorcyclists getting hit. For example, because of their smaller sizes, they're harder to see. They are smaller visual targets, and that means other drivers are more likely to pull out in front of them or to hit them due to not seeing them on the roads. Since this is an issue, many motorcyclists choose to make their motorcycles louder.

Around 70 percent of motorcycle versus vehicle accidents take place at intersections. One particular issue at intersections is the potential for a driver to make a left turn in front of a motorcyclist. This leads to the motorcyclist hitting the vehicle head-on, which forces him or her off the motorcycle in many cases. Some common injuries after a collision include road rash, broken bones, concussions and other traumatic injuries. These require ongoing care, which is why those involved in crashes should consider speaking to a legal professional before accepting any kind of settlement offer.
