File a claim if you're hit due to negligence or distractions

There are a few motorcycling myths that should be addressed to help motorcyclists avoid getting into accidents with drivers. Things like making your motorcycle louder, for example, might not actually help you avoid a collision.

Did you know that if you turn up the pipes on your bike, you could actually cause drivers to become more aggressive or to tune you out in most cases? In fact, those with louder motorcycles actually have a higher risk of being involved in an accident, despite it seeming like the louder motorcycles would stand out more.

What does work? Wearing bright colors. Opt for yellow or orange to stand out, and remember to wave at drivers, to slow down and to honk or flash your lights if you're not sure if they see you.

Another myth is that those who are going to collide with another vehicle should lay down their motorcycles. This is not always the best option, even though it may have been back before anti-lock brakes were used commonly. If you're going to crash, put on your brakes to slow down. If you lay down the bike, you will still slow down, but it's less likely to slow down as much as the brakes would be able to.

While these tips can help you stay safer on the roads, it's the responsibility of all drivers to pay attention and to prevent accidents. If you're injured because a driver doesn't see you or turns out in front of you, you have every right to seek a claim. Our website has more on the steps you should take next.
