Pedestrians can help prevent accidents with these tips

There are certain places that are simply dangerous for pedestrians. Whether they're crossings where pedestrians are often struck or locations where pedestrians are exposed to heavy, high-speed traffic, some areas are more dangerous than others.

Fortunately, pedestrians can take steps to keep themselves safe in these situations. With some preventative steps and safety tips, you can help keep yourself and your family from being hit.

-- Remember to stand out at night

If you're going out at night, make sure you wear a jacket with reflectors, carry a flashlight or otherwise make yourself stand out. The darkness makes it hard for drivers to see, and you don't want to make it harder for them to see you by wearing dark colors or being nearly invisible due to the lighting conditions.

-- Cross at crosswalks only

Many crosswalks in America now have crossing signals to make sure you get to the other side safely. If you don't have crosswalks where you want to cross, try to find an intersection. Drivers typically expect to see pedestrians cross at intersections, and the lights make it easier to cross once traffic has come to a stop. If intersections or crosswalks aren't available, try to cross where you can see for a distance in either direction. If you cross just over the top of a hill, a driver may not see you in time to stop.

-- Avoid busy times of the day

If you really want to avoid traffic at all costs, try to go out when there's less on the roads. Avoid rush-hour traffic in the mornings and afternoons when people want to get to work or to come home.

These are just a few tips that can help keep you safe. If a driver strikes you because he or she is negligent or distracted, you can file a claim. Our website has more information on the steps to take next.
