Times of the day when pedestrian accidents are most likely

You probably already know that pedestrian accidents can happen in New Jersey any time of the day. However, government data reveals that certain times of the day pose more risk for walkers and cyclists than other times do. If you take the time to learn when pedestrian accidents are most likely to occur, you may be better equipped to stay accident-free when walking the streets of Jersey City.

As you might expect, weekends are far more dangerous than weekdays for pedestrians. Research shows that 29 percent of fatal pedestrian accidents across the nation occur on weekends between the hours of 6 p.m. and 8:59 p.m. By contrast, 25 percent of fatal accidents involving pedestrians occur during the same hours on weekdays.

The time between 9 p.m. and 11:59 p.m. during the weekend is the second most dangerous period for pedestrians with 27 percent of fatal accidents. During that same period on a weekday, only 20 percent of fatal pedestrian accidents occur.

Finally, the after midnight hours of a weekend represent the third most dangerous time for pedestrians. Statistics show that 19 percent of the nation's fatal pedestrian accidents occur between 12 a.m. and 2:59 a.m. On a weeknight, the statistics are dramatically lower during that period with only 8 percent of fatal accidents occurring.

The lesson here is to be cautious of dangerous or negligent motorists at all times when walking, but be extra cautious during the weekend. When both motorists and pedestrians do all they can to remain accident-free on the roads, it makes New Jersey safer for everyone. If a pedestrian accident does occur, a personal injury attorney can provide advice about your legal options.
