Dump truck driver arrested in fatal pedestrian accident

For many New Jersey citizens, walking and biking are great sources of recreation and also a more economical means of transportation. As roadways become more and more crowded across the state, greater numbers of pedestrians and bicyclists are sharing crowded streets with motorists. Although vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians often share these roadways without incident, there will always be a risk for accidents. Because pedestrians and bicyclists are fully exposed to the elements, any pedestrian accident can easily be fatal. Recently, an accident in Riverdale left a bicyclist dead and a motorist behind bars.

Police reports say a bicyclist was traveling along a turnpike in Riverdale and was struck by a dump truck. The bicyclist suffered major injuries in the collision and was transported to a local hospital. Tragically, the bicyclist later died due to his injuries.

According to police, the driver of the dump truck fled the scene of the crash. Police located the driver a short time later and arrested him. The dump truck driver was charged with hindering his own apprehension and leaving the scene of an accident involving death. Authorities are still seeking information about the incident.

There are laws in existence across the country to protect bicyclists and pedestrians. However, accidents involving pedestrians seem to be occurring more frequently these days. New Jersey residents have options at their disposal that can ease the suffering that comes with losing a loved one in a pedestrian accident. If negligence is proved, the surviving family members can hold the responsible party accountable and pursue damages by filing a wrongful death lawsuit in a civil court. A successful lawsuit can result in a monetary award that can be used for funeral expenses and other monetary losses accrued as the result of a fatal accident.
