Man arrested in alleged hit-and-run pedestrian accident

In the state of New Jersey and across the United States, there are specific laws that exist to protect those that travel on foot. Things such as crosswalks, traffic signals and special infrastructure were designed to keep pedestrians safe as they travel adjacent to crowded roadways. Unfortunately, due to the number of pedestrians and vehicles in close proximity, accidents are bound to happen. When a driver flees the scene of a pedestrian accident, he or she could be facing serious charges.

A recent accident in Edison left a man behind bars after he allegedly hit a pedestrian and left the scene. According to reports, the man was traveling on Old Lincoln Highway during the overnight hours. Police reports say the man allegedly struck a pedestrian and drove away. Not long after the first collision, police say a second vehicle inadvertently ran over the pedestrian.

The second driver stayed on the scene and cooperated with authorities. Tragically, the pedestrian was pronounced dead shortly after being struck. Police say the pedestrian was a 30-year-old native of East Orange and was just released from a correctional facility prior to being killed. Police later located and arrested the driver that had fled the scene.

In New Jersey, these types of accidents are on the rise despite stringent laws and safety regulations. Fortunately, options are available for families that have been affected by this type of tragic accident. Those that have been injured or lost a loved one due to no fault of their own in a pedestrian accident may be able to pursue claims for documented damages, including pain and suffering.
