Here's a few things you might not know about car insurance

There are a number of things you might not realize about your car insurance. For example, did you know that males tend to pay more because they are more likely to be involved in a car accident? Those with poor credit pay more too.

The fact is that basic car insurance isn't meant to cover everything you need after a crash. It's intended to provide the basic insurance needed in a collision and has the intention of covering another person's costs. If another person causes your accident, you can sue for compensation from his or her insurance to pay for your damages, but if you don't have underinsured or uninsured coverage, comprehensive or personal injury protection coverage, the insurance itself is not meant to cover your injuries.

Around one out of every seven drivers is uninsured, which means that you're taking a risk of being involved in a crash and having to seek a lawsuit to make a claim against a driver. Without insurance, the only way to seek compensation is through a direct lawsuit. You can help protect yourself by carrying personal injury protection and underinsured or uninsured motorist insurance, which helps cover your costs if the other driver can't.

If you've been hit by a driver who doesn't have insurance, you have the option of pursuing a civil lawsuit. Your attorney can help you file the documents you need with the court to show that you were injured at the fault of the other party. The court has the power to order the other driver to pay you for your losses or to cover the costs associated with your medical care.
