Does workers' compensation cover post-traumatic stress disorder?

Post-traumatic stress disorder is a serious mental illness that needs to be addressed. If you have PTSD from a job that you performed, can you get workers' compensation? The answer may be yes, depending on the circumstances.

The Nebraska Department of Veterans Affairs estimated that 7.8 percent of people will experience PTSD during their lives. This disorder makes it difficult to go to a job or earn a wage. Fortunately, the workers' compensation system is designed to help those who are suffering from PTSD while they recover.

One thing that you should know is that you don't have to be a veteran to have PTDS. In fact, anyone who suffers from a traumatic event, as an adult or a child, could suffer from it. It's been estimated that around 5.2 million suffer from PTSD in any single year. That's only the people who have been diagnosed.

For workers' compensation to cover PTSD, it must be a work-related condition. That means that if you suffered a trauma on the job and now have PTSD, your condition should be covered by workers' compensation. You must be able to prove that there is a sufficient link between your current symptoms and the workplace accident. In cases where an accident did not occur but there was harassment or other forms of stress or trauma, you should keep documentation on what occurred. Keep all your medical documentation and be prepared to present the story of what happened to your workers' compensation attorney in full detail. This can help you prove that you deserve workers' compensation.
