Here's what you should do after you're in a crash

After a crash, there are several things you need to do. You'll want to file an insurance claim against the other driver to start with. You can file a claim in a number of ways, from filing it online to calling the insurance company directly. Some companies now even have mobile apps that help you keep track of your claim.

All people involved in accidents have to provide some basic information to the insurance company. For example, you may need to provide the date and time of the accident, your car's VIN or license plate number, your driver's license number and other important information.

At the scene of the accident, check to make sure everyone is okay. If anyone needs first aid, you should provide it if you are able. Don't move your vehicles unless they're in the way of traffic; the way the vehicles hit and landed as a result is important for determining who is at fault. Call 911 and wait for the police and emergency services to arrive.

While you wait for help, you can take steps to make your claim easier. Take photos of the scene, get the VIN number of the other vehicle, gather up witness emails or phone numbers and collect the name, address and other identifying information from the driver of the other vehicle. Try not to talk about the accident with the other driver. Neither of you should admit fault for the crash, and you should never apologize.

Whether you're hit as a pedestrian or were driving at the time of the crash, this information helps you get what you need. Our website has more on what to do after you're hit by a vehicle.
